About

Joltmap came about as a result of discussions among a cadre of senior managers (each with decades of experience) about the need to quickly obtaining a clear understanding of project statuses and how they linked to corporate goals.

Joltmaps are re-imagined benefit maps. Benefit maps are concept and practice that has been around for many years in project management.

Joltmaps are an intentionally simplified version of benefit maps. The simplifications are intended to ensure joltmaps can be easily digested. Joltmaps are intended to be used by senior managers rather than program or project managers, though program and project managers will likely prepare the joltmap for managers. The simplifications mean that the time required to prepare and update a joltmap is short.

Joltmaps do add a dimension to benefet maps - ratings. Projects and deliverables are rated according to cost, time and scope/quality. These ratings flow through to tactical and strategic goals depending on how strongly tactical and strategic goals depend on projects and deliverables.

We have several enhancements planned for joltmap, including:

  • A zoom function to allow attention to be focussed on one project, deliverable or benefit.
  • A "what-if" analysis function to allow senior managers to quickly understand the consequences of changing or cancellling projects
  • Improvements to entering assumptions about the way projects and deliverables impact on goals.

We would love to hear of any improvements that you think would make better joltmaps.
